Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day Award Winners

The competition was fierce this year with remarkable submissions from all Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day Award applicants. Thank you to all schools who shared their incredible stories with us. It’s our pleasure to showcase the outstanding achievements of these five schools below. Congratulations!

Brighton Charter School, AZ

Brighton Charter School launched a powerful Day of Dialogue that extended throughout the year. Their walk was a statement of unity, inclusion, and anti-bullying. Their theme “One Voice, One School” encouraged students to think about how they can build respect and inclusion. Students led conversations around diversity, respect, and standing up for others. The school hosted events honoring Black leaders, artists, changemakers, and created spaces for student-led dialogue circles to share their experiences. Their yearlong efforts reinforced commitment to creating a more inclusive and united school community.

Carrillo K-5 Communication and Creative Arts Magnet School, AZ

Leading up to the day, every grade level read The Story of Ruby Bridges, participated in classroom discussions, and engaged in various activities to deepen their understanding of civil rights.  With the support of their SWAT (Students Wellness Advocacy Team) students walked together across campus, wearing purple, sharing posters and messages they created in honor of Ruby. The annual event continues to grow, empowering students to become changemakers and ensuring that their community continues to value equity, diversity, and seeing strength through the sharing of differing viewpoints.

Catherine L. Zane Middle School, CA

Catherine L. Zane Middle School’s Black Student Union created a study guide that spurred dialogue in advisory classes. Students also raised awareness through announcements at their multicultural fair. Despite the rain, nearly 200 participants joined the walk, supported by parents, city officials, and police escorts. Their multi-day Day of Dialogue focused on discussions of belonging where students explored themes of celebration of differences.

Martin Elementary, CA

Martin Elementary brought together public and private schools in their district,  gathering in front of City Hall with district leaders leading the morning rally. Each grade level shared their year-long projects and ideas. The student council focused on gratitude by organizing a hot chocolate station for staff.  Another grade level expressed acts of kindness by cheering on kindergarten and 1st grade to have a great day as they headed to lunch. Environmental initiatives included  composting and educating peers on how to properly sort waste.

Mno Grant Elementary, CA

At Mno Grant Elementary, 95% of students participated in the walk and had about 450 participants walk together, including teachers, aides, administrators, parents, and board members. Students read I Am Ruby Bridges and held classroom discussions. The day inspired students to take action as helpers, tutors, and classroom assistants, resulting in a more connected school community.

Robert E. Lake Elementary School, NV

Robert E. Lake Elementary had a week of learning and celebration. Students led classroom presentations, researched, shared insights into Ruby Bridges’ life, the Civil Rights Movement, and the importance of perseverance in the fight for equality. Students held a week-long Living Museum of Black History that encouraged more discussions, celebrating history, culture, inclusivity, and values of diversity.

Lifesaving Medal Winner

The AAA School Safety Patrol Lifesaving Medal is the highest award given to a Patroller. Recipients are select Patrollers who, while on duty, have saved the life of a person in imminent danger.

August Boeger Middle School, CA

Led by Black and Brown Student Union (BSSU) member, Romero Williams, the BSSU at August Boeger Middle School organized a dynamic Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, featuring a catchy rap remix and purple-clad participants. Engaging in meaningful dialogue, students discussed combating negativity and racism with proactive action as well as ideas for community improvement. Their impactful initiatives foster a culture of inclusivity and respect, earning well-deserved recognition. Congratulations to all involved.

Catherine L. Zane Middle School, CA

Catherine L. Zane Middle School marked Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day with educational sessions and a community walk. Through advisory classes, historical materials were shared, fostering discussions on diversity. Several classes made posters with positive messages, highlighting the school’s commitment to inclusivity. Approximately 150 participants, including students, teachers and community members, celebrated the day with an assembly to promote understanding of African American culture.

Madera South High School, CA

During their Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, students collaborated with their sister elementary school, escorting 3rd grade students from the school to the stadium. Small groups participated in readings of “I am Ruby Bridges” followed by discussions led by high schoolers. The BSU generously donated books to elementary classrooms. At the stadium, students enjoyed treats and engaged in discussions led by BSU officers on the day’s significance. Reflecting on Ruby Bridges’ legacy, high school students guided the younger students in brainstorming ways to be changemakers in their school community, promoting positivity and acceptance.

Brighton Charter School, AZ

During their Ruby Bridges Walk and Day of Dialogue, Brighton students united to combat bullying and celebrate diversity. Inspired by Ruby Bridges’ courage, the event symbolized unity and inclusivity, with students reflecting on her legacy and pledging to stand against bullying. Led by the AAA School Safety Patrol officer, the Day of Dialogue addressed the pervasive issue of bullying, fostering discussions and empowering students to create a culture of respect and empathy within the school community.

College Park Elementary School, CA

College Park Elementary hosted a meaningful Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, guided by co-fifth grade class presidents. The day commenced with a presentation highlighting Ruby’s historical significance, followed by an all-school assembly featuring Principal Mrs. Estonia’s opening remarks. The event, which included a community walk, left a lasting impression on students and the surrounding neighborhood. Student leaders, Brandon Chou and Penelope Diec, emphasized the importance of inclusivity and welcoming everyone to their school.

AAA wants to recognize AAA School Safety Patrollers and Advisors who best exemplify leadership qualities and perform their duties with excellence. We are also proud to announce a new grant award for select schools that went above and beyond during the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day.

Winners receive grants up to $2,000 for their school. The 2022-23 awards include:

Patroller of The Year Award: 

Examples of Nominee Qualifications

Leadership Qualities (15 points): Examples may include communication skills, record-keeping, attendance, care of patrol equipment or leadership positions in AAA School Safety Patrol, school or the community. (500 character limit)

Safety Skills (15 points): Examples may include knowledge of patrol responsibilities, control of post, awareness of traffic dangers, understanding of emergency procedures, and efficiency in seeking adult guidance. (500 character limit)

School Involvement (10 points): Examples may include academic grades, school attendance and participation in activities such as newsletter, yearbook, clubs or sports. (500 character limit)

Citizenship/Volunteerism (10 points): Examples may include participation in outreach programs such as food or book drives, services as a student tutor, school events or community events. (500 character limit)

Student Essay: “How participating in my AAA School Safety Patrol helped me become a better leader.” The essay can be submitted in writing (2,500 character limit) or as a short video (2 minute limit). The nominee should state their Patroller responsibilities, dates of services, identify leadership qualities they value, and explain how participation in the patrol program allowed them to develop these leadership qualities.

Patrol Advisor of the Year Award: 

Examples of Nominee Qualifications

Strong belief in the value of the program (15 points): Examples may include support of the program’s lifesaving and educational benefits, lobbying to advance the program, adding value to the program in the school and community or communicating the program’s core values to faculty and students. (500 character limit)

Knowledge of traffic safety principles (15 points): Examples may include general understanding of all facets of the program or awareness of traffic dangers, emergency procedures, traffic interaction, safe pedestrian practices, school bus loading/unloading zones or school zones.

Leadership Skills (10 points): Examples may include morale-building, traffic safety education, organization, program coordination, conducting meetings and trainings, success with distance learning/hybrid models, supervision of patrol duties or obtaining program buy-in from the school and local community. (500 character limit)

Dedication to the program (10 points): Examples may include volunteerism, dependability, efforts above and beyond the expected Advisor role or additional benefits to the students’ safety, leadership and education. (500 character limit)
